Where to Play Padel in Roscommon
No padel court in County Roscommon is open. One project is tracked here — two outdoor courts at Coláiste Chiaráin in Athlone — and it is at the coming-soon stage, not taking bookings. So the county count as of August 2026 is zero.
Roscommon is an unusual case, though, and it is worth reading the next paragraph before you write the county off. The nearest open courts are not an hour away. They are in Athlone, on the far bank of the Shannon, in County Westmeath.
The Athlone Complication
Athlone straddles the Shannon, and the river is the Roscommon–Westmeath county boundary. The town is one place to live in and two counties on paper, which produces a slightly absurd situation for padel:
- Coláiste Chiaráin sits on the Roscommon side. Two outdoor courts are planned there. Not open.
- Planet Padel Athlone sits on the Westmeath side. Three indoor courts, open, taking bookings now.
So if you live in Athlone and you want to play this week, you can — you just cross the bridge. The court is not in your county, but for most people in south Roscommon it is the closest padel in the country by a comfortable margin. Full detail on it is on our padel in Westmeath page.
Indoor also matters here. Three courts under a roof means the booking you make in February is a booking you keep, which is not something you can say about most of what is planned around the midlands.
If You Are Not Near Athlone
Roscommon is a long county. Athlone is at the southern tip of it, and from Boyle, Castlerea, Ballaghaderreen or Strokestown it is a serious drive for an hour of padel. If that is you, do not assume Athlone is your answer just because it is technically the local option — depending on which border you are nearest, something in another direction may be closer.

Assuming you are heading for Athlone, the process is simple enough:
- Book online in advance: Indoor courts in the midlands are in demand once the weather turns. Evening slots are the first to go.
- Have four players: Padel is doubles, and most venues price the court rather than the person, so a group of four splits the cost four ways.
- Check what is included: Some bookings include balls, some do not. Ask when you book rather than at the desk.
- Allow for the bridge: Athlone traffic across the river at going-home time is worth ten minutes of contingency if your slot is at six.
Getting Started with Padel
Padel is one of the easier racket sports to start. The serve is underarm, the court is enclosed by glass and mesh, and the ball stays in play off the walls — which means rallies rather than a succession of lost points. Someone who has never held a racket usually has a real game going within a session.
Things that help in the first few weeks:
- Play the rebound: A ball off the back glass is nearly always easier than the same ball taken early. Give it the extra half-second.
- Move up together: The net is where points are won. Both of you go, or neither does.

Roscommon's position is better than the court count suggests. A county with zero open courts would normally mean a long drive, but the Athlone boundary means a large share of the county's population already has an indoor venue within a few minutes — it just happens to be in Westmeath.
